Many of you probably visit FloreaShelby because you’re interested in learning how to incorporate natural ingredients into your skincare regime. At the same time, I’m sure many of you are just here because you know me personally and don’t really care much for skincare but want to support me nonetheless.
From my blog alone, there’s a lot of information you can gather about me. I’m a photographer, writer, artist, skincare lover, and advocate of mental and spiritual wellbeing. I’ve touched on race briefly in my essay, “On Achieving Your Own Inner Peace” but that does not properly reflect my strong feelings about the racist climate in America.
As a mixed Chinese and African American woman, or Woman of Color, I have a personal stake in my determination to end racism in our country. As a feminist, I see the intersections between race and gender/class/sexuality oppression. As an empath, I internalize the deep pain of People of Color in America. And regardless of any of the identities I’ve just shared with you, I know in my heart that we, as human beings, cannot continue to operate under a system of institutionalized racism.
I am not afraid of expressing these “heavy” topics on my blog. I understand that many of you are solely here for skincare, but I never wanted to give the impression that I would refrain from discussing issues that affect me - or people in my community.
Does this change the nature of my blog content? Not really. I will, of course, continue to share my skin and hair tips with you all. In addition to that well received content, I will begin to incorporate more essays about race, gender, and sexuality here. While your screen is only a 2D rendering of who I am, I promise to bring you as close to a 3D version of myself through my writing, photography, and art. It's due time that you met all dimensions of FloreaShelby.
Thank you for visiting my blog and sharing your stories of how I’ve inspired you.
