Where you live has a HUGE impact on your mental health. Last year, I lived in a triple with two other girls. Though one of my roommates and I became very close and our energies made the room a fun place to be in, I didn't have as much space as I wanted. Of course, space is a luxury, but now I realize that there were steps I could have taken last year to make my room safer.
This year, I've set up a corner on my desk for spiritual and mindful tools. I have a chart of essential oils and their corresponding healing crystals, a Moon Deck which I use for tarot-like readings, a yellow candle from an amazing Botanica, sage, and LOTS of oils. I try to meditate at least once a night, and referring back to my journaling post from a couple weeks ago, I make an effort to record my reflections there.
I come alive in the night, as cheesy as that sounds. I love nesting, burning incense as the sun sets, curling up in bed as the candle flickers, and the feeling of protection that my room provides. I urge you all to set up a space in your room or living area where you can add altar-like things. Candles, dishes, necklaces, crystals, etc are great for creating a space for worship, reflection, and protection.
I like to keep this area as clean as possible, avoiding clutter and work-related things to maintain the integrity of the sacred! Here are some specifics for each aspect of my sacred space:
I charge my crystals once every couple of weeks by leaving them out under the moonlight if it's a Full or New Moon. I'll charge and cleanse them in salt if they're new purchases or I want to intensely care for them. I currently have seventeen healing crystals (including some repeats): citrine, amethyst, moonstone, green aventurine, quartz, rose quartz, black tourmaline, peridot, calcite, dumortierite, and selenite. I've bolded my favorites, which I enjoy using most and have had mystical experiences with when meditating.
I have a series of oils on my desk. Some are for moisturizing and incorporating into my skincare routine, while others are essential oils that I use during mediation for aromatherapeutic purposes. For skincare, I use jojoba, avocado, and almond oil. Sometimes I apply it directly to my skin, other times I'll add it to other skincare products for serums or additional moisture.
I currently use lavender, peppermint, a heart chakra combination oil, and a third eye combination oil from CocoaButterMothers for aromatherapy.
I burn incense every day, always airing the room out before and after so we don't wind up with second-hand smoke! I ordered incense from Amazon over the summer but have picked up packets from World Market and local Botanicas. I also have a yellow, unscented candle that I like to burn during meditation. I enjoy burning things because it helps create an environment that is welcoming and unifying.
My Moon Deck is probably one of my best investments. It's an amazing tarot-like deck with illustrations of beautiful, diverse women. There are phrases at the bottom of each card which can act as guidance, daily mantras, or just things to keep in mind. You can make spreads similar to tarot readings, like for example: a past, present and future spread.
