For many of us, the events that comprised 2017 were the last steps in the final stretch before reaching the mountain peaks. The moments leading up to the shedding of old snakeskin, the rough inhales right before an orgasmic release, the “almost-there-but-not-quite” attitude that often deters us from actually making it to our final destination. There was collective progression in ways that defied linear, probable time. Personally, I felt as though I was standing at the edge of a pool, toes extending beyond the cement but the soles of my feet firmly planted. It felt like looking down at the clear blue gossamer, not yet ready to dive into the water but past the point of no return.
As one calendrical year nears its end, I wanted to share this tarot spread with you all as we usher in the next. These cards ring so true in my heart and soul, and I’m certain that it will resonate with those of you who felt you put in work this year. Without any further ado, let’s discuss 2017 and our transition into 2018.
COLLECTIVE ENERGY: QUEEN OF WANDS
A woman, positioned on a cloud above the storm, stands with her hands outstretched. She grasps sunrays before they slip through her fingers, stands with her legs shoulder-width apart in a power stance, and harnesses the cosmic power above her to influence that of which is below her. She is in control, in wholeness, and in tune. Collectively, this was the year that many of us found our footing. We’d experienced many blows to our sense of self in prior years, which perhaps initiated the necessary death we underwent this year. Queen of Wands illustrates self-mastery and a deep understanding of the elements, all that is. Her energy is not the end of the journey, however, and many of us understand that feeling stable in the Self does not mean our work is done. We have a responsibility to the collective, especially as Gaia begins her transition into a higher dimension. Those who are stuck in states of resentment, anger, victimization and low-vibrating, love rejecting realities will be left behind as Gaia prepares to transition. Perhaps we gave birth to ourselves this year, fully being able to look ourselves in the eye and see our shadows as easily as we see our light. Yes, perhaps we journeyed into the depths of traumas, encased and condensed in nuggets we’ve buried within ourselves, and through transmutation allowed the pain to nurture our growth. We affirmed and discovered in the most beautiful, chaotic ways. As we enter a new calendar year, we will be asked to allow our self-mastery to inform our contributions to the collective. And we will do so with ease and joy.
2017 SYNOPSIS: NINE OF PENTACLES
We breathe in the crisp mountain air and drink from the cool springwater, smiling to ourselves in gratitude and fulfillment. As the days of 2017 dwindle, we feel as though we are arriving at an Oasis where warm sands and welcoming sunrays await us in pure bliss. There is a sense of temporary enjoyment here; we have no doubt traveled further than we thought our feet could take us, and for this we should celebrate. Nine of Pentacles speaks to the near-end of a journey, as it is the second to last card in the Tarot deck. Again, there’s a swelling of self-mastery and accomplishment that is undeniable. The Pentacles suit corresponds to the Earth element, the physical and the tangible of this third dimension. It is here that we can manifest and see our intentions come to fruition in a drawn out process. Our manifestations await us, here at this Oasis, and many of us will want to stay here forever. There’s a sweet, satiating taste in the air and we bask in our resilience, strength and ability. We alone are the reason for our stay at this Oasis, we alone created a reality for ourselves. But Nine of Pentacles also warns us of the attachment that comes with getting too comfortable. It’s a luxurious card, signaling material wealth and comfort, an Earth sign’s dream. Overall, this journey through 2017 led us to a resting place where we can finally kick our shoes off and enjoy the world as the most authentic version of ourselves we’ve ever been. Many of us are experiencing abundant love and blessings, for the first time ever, and of course we should enjoy the fruits of our labor when we feel called to! Nine of Pentacles affirms the importance of celebrating and giving thanks, though it is not afraid to be the force gently tugging at our sleeves when it’s time to move on and continue our work.
BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS: FIVE OF PENTACLES AND SIX OF CUPS
When we take a closer look at the last year, what do we find? Two of the biggest takeaways can best be understood as the Five of Pentacles and Six of Cups. These two cards flew out of the deck, and the Six of Cups had tried to catch my attention when I was initially shuffling the deck.
Five of Pentacles illustrates a sense of isolation, obsession, stubborn or blocked communication and “reflective brooding.” Throughout the year, it seemed very easy to fall into a mode of obsessive negativity and an inability to healthily and effectively communicate our frustrations. While many of us learned to navigate the maze of this simulation with the guidance of Spirit, this does not mean that we didn’t experience blockages, frustrations, and isolation.
Oftentimes, when we first begin engaging with the Self on a deeper level, we’re overwhelmed with everything at once. Suddenly traumas, hidden/repressed desires and unconscious resentment fights to make its presence known and we feel stuck within our own entrapment. Even in the greater context of global news, an influx of allegations and exposures of injustice spilled out of the shadows and into the light for all to see. Racists and sexists made their way into daily headlines and we were bombarded with reminders of the persisting injustice and consolidation of power that controls our collective, human society. It’s very easy to trap oneself in states of anger, helplessness and anxiety when these news influxes take over. We must continue to practice balance and self-care by going within, asking our Highest Selves what we need, and tending to that first. We cannot be competent in effective communication with others if we are not in healthy communication with ourselves. Before we can wipe out the racists and the sexists on a macro level, we’re called to remember the healing power in self-love. Tend to your emotional and mental health needs, allow yourself to retreat inwards to re-cultivate your sense of stability, direction and groundedness. I truly believe there is a collective blockage of the throat and heart chakras. Many people are still invested in call-out culture, would rather call out racial and gender injustices than find ways to participate in its dismantling, and haven’t opened themselves up to the radical possibility of healing through love. There’s a general sense of an inability to communicate what we truly need, because the collective is still struggling to engage in the heart center to confirm what those needs are. Five of Pentacles is asking us to allow ourselves to take the time we need to process our thoughts. When we haven’t fully accepted and processed our emotions, they take control of us. Instead, practice acknowledging an emotion when it comes up, allowing yourself to feel all of it in that moment, and affirming that it’s okay to release the emotion when it no longer serves you. Emotional competence is the new wave, everyone. We can’t afford to be trapped in polar extreme states of anything, anymore.
Six of Cups offers a healthy alternative to living in states of isolation from love in all its forms. Here, we are asked to open ourselves up to receiving and giving pleasure in selfless and fluid ways. The Six of Cups is the merging of the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine in sensual, fulfilling harmony. There’s a new level of self-love that’s being explored, as we are granting ourselves permission to surrender to love and service. There’s vulnerability and empowerment, giving and receiving, and Divine reciprocity and harmony here. I feel as though this general Six of Cups energy is looming in the background for many of us as we reflect on the last year; while we may not be able to articulate the peace we’ve found in yielding to love, the sentiment is still there. Did you give up old habits and behaviors that were steeped in hate, resentment, egoic thinking and other low-vibrating energies? Did you find yourself making room for more activities and relationships that promoted love, discovery, and creations? This is the power of the Six of Cups. This is the power of love energy and activated heart centers. And this is what will lead the way into the higher dimensions that 2018 has to offer.
GUIDANCE FOR 2018: KNIGHT OF WANDS
Funnily enough, the Knight of Wands comes before the Queen of Wands in the Tarot deck, though it is the card that ushers us into the last portion of the reading. While the Queen of Wands for our “Collective Energy” section spoke of self-mastery as the beginning stages of a long journey ahead, the Knight of Wands offers a slightly different message. Here, the same energy of overcoming obstacles is present, but there is an emphasis on what the future holds. The Knight of Wands, bursting with fiery passion and uncontainable energy, brings determination and a vital life force for the coming year. When interpreted alone, the Knight of Wands may be overly ambitious and aggressive, lack the necessary planning skills to manifest in the physical realm, and signify an eager and naive energy that just cannot be contained. However, returning to the lessons and messages of 2017, we needn’t fear the hasty energies that the Knight of Wands embodies. When paired with the other cards of the Queen of Wands, Nine of Pentacles, Five of Pentacles and Six of Cups, it is the Knight of Wands that will lead us into a new timeline of love, authenticity, compassion, and bliss. We are calling in all the elements of our lessons learned from the last year; our efforts are acknowledged, our pain can now be processed healthily and fluidly, we celebrate our material success and self-mastery while preparing to pour our individual elixirs into the collective pot of vitality. It is the Knight of Wands who amps up the energy, restores passion, and reminds us to keep going. There is a new timeline comprised of love energy waiting for us. As Gaia makes her transition, we are watching hateful mindsets internally combust, self-serving motives dissipate, and collective unconsciousness wake up. The Knight of Wands is the spirit of enlightenment moving through the sleepy collectives, shaking their headboards and reminding them of their power. It is the electrifying force running through the globe, destroying unproductive structures and making way for a new generation of healers, messengers, and compassionate beings. This is the wise energy that 2018 holds in store for us. Remember to channel all that you’ve affirmed into the collective. Pour your gifts into the collective, and thus yourself. Continue to let your passion lead the way. Affirm the necessity of the darkness and the shadows, for now you’ve seen how all the elements maintain a beautiful and chaotic cosmic balance. You are ready for whatever comes your way, for you have expansive vision, deep insight, and undying unconditional love.
